Amazing Grace

Amazing Grace

“Amazing Grace” is a Christian hymn published in 1779, with words written by the English poet and Anglican clergyman John Newton (1725-1807). It is an immensely popular hymn, particularly in the US, where it is used for both religious and secular purposes. It has been estimated that the song is performed about ten million times annually in various forms.

The story behind the author and his words is fascinating and has been produced as a movie and Broadway play. John’s mother died before he turned seven and he joined his father on a merchant ship as an apprentice at age eleven.  He was well known for his headstrong disobedience and incredible profanity. After being flogged for desertion from the Royal navy he joined the Atlantic slave trade. In 1748, a violent storm battered his vessel so severely that he called out to God for mercy. That moment marked his conversion but he continued slave trading, considered a respectable vocation at the time, for several more trips until he left the sea for good at age 30. Newton began studying Christian theology and began preaching about the grace of the cross which saved him and later he became an abolitionist. Shortly before his death at age 82 he preached, “My memory is nearly gone, but I remember two things: That I am a great sinner and that Christ is a great Savior!”

An amazing story of a changed life but what does grace mean?  In Christian belief it means “God’s free gift of unmerited favor manifested in salvation and bestowing of blessings”. I was always taught the simple acrostic; God’s Riches At Christs’ Expense.

God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.      Eph 2:8-10 (NLT)

John Piper wrote; “Well, it  appears that the word grace in Paul’s use not only refers to God’s character trait or disposition or inclination to treat people better than we deserve, but the word grace also refers to the action or the power or the influence or the force of this disposition, which produces real, practical outcomes in people’s lives, like being sufficient for good deeds or enduring the thorn in the flesh or working harder than everybody else, which Paul says about his own apostolic work.”

Throughout the pages of the Bible we see story after story of men and women, rich and poor, powerful and unnamed, failing God by disobeying His law and turning to temporary gain or satisfaction. By God’s grace these people saw God at work in their circumstances and the power of changed lives. Their stories are much like ours. God’s love never fails. He faithfully waits for us to turn back (repent) so we can enjoy a living and growing relationship with Him.

If you fear you’ve written too many checks on God’s kindness account, drag regrets around like a broken bumper, huff and puff more than you delight and rest, and, most of all, if you wonder whether God can do something with the mess of your life, then grace is what you need.      Max Lucado

I may not have a history like John Newton but I need God’s grace just as much. I want Him to work on my heart and through His enabling power to live in grace. Grace extends forgiveness and kindness by overlooking others faults. Grace carries on when people misjudge you. By God’s grace our lives are put into order with purpose and meaning. God’s amazing grace never runs out.

So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.      Heb 4:16 (NLT)

Seasons of Refreshing

Seasons of Refreshing

The ladies at my church recently held a day retreat to come together and share some hard things as well as how God has worked throughout the past year and a half. Now that restrictions have been lifted here in Massachusetts it felt so good to be with sisters face to face. I am an extrovert and love to chat with people and I didn’t realize how much the “Covid rules” affected me until after our retreat. My soul needed this time of spiritual refreshment; the fun, food, laughter, prayer, singing and reconnecting with friends.

In 1 Kings chapter 18 and 19 we read about the prophet Elijah having showdown between God and the prophets of Baal. In a nutshell, God won and the false prophets were all killed. Now the wicked King Ahab and his evil wife Jezebel were furious. Elijah is burnt out and very afraid so he runs to the wilderness where God provides a nap and some food. Refreshment. God had another assignment for him but first he needed some physical and spiritual fortification.

The word refresh means “to give new strength or energy to; reinvigorate”. With technology we refresh our devices – we restore their settings and clean out clutter so they function better. We need to refresh and restore our souls so we function better. Everyone around me is looking forward to having vacation or family reunions but now that we are free to enjoy life “as we think it should be” how will you refresh your soul? We dare not jump back on the hamster wheel of life.

Here are ten of my favorite suggestions to refresh your soul I gathered from the internet.

  1. Get outside and enjoy some vitamin C – God’s feel good medicine.

2. Now that we can (with consideration of others feelings) give your family and best buddies a huge hug.

3. Cut out the background noise and the distractions including the phone.

4. Put some uplifting music on.

5. Take a walk and stretch your body.

6. Read a good book and get lost in the words.

7. Take time for your hobby or try something new. Being creative feels good.

8. Pamper yourself.

9. Check Your Attitude! Have you allowed negative or false thoughts to invade your soul? Ask God to forgive and cleanse your heart and mind.

10. Make a list of things you are grateful for.

For a season of spiritual refreshing get your soul into a place where you can receive God’s peace and renewal. Spend time reading scripture, calm your spirit and pray.

Be still, and know that I am God. Psalms 46:10 (ESV)

Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, 20 that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, Acts 3:19-20

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. Psalms 51:10,12 (ESV)

…they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31 (ESV)

God’s promise to us,

I Choose Joy

I Choose Joy

Several of my friends choose a word to focus on for the New Year and I chose JOY. Joy is a major theme of Christmas but it isn’t the same as happiness. Events or experiences that

have been hard earned or long awaited for bring a sense of joy.  Examples like the birth of a child, good news from a doctor, a college graduation and a wedding day bring a joy to remember. Joy is not fleeting or a superficial and soon forgotten feeling. Oh no, joy is a deep inner emotion that lasts and is remembered.

In the middle of a dark and ordinary night, angels appeared to ordinary shepherds with “good news and tidings of joy for all people”.  Frightened at first but then reassured they were told to go into the city and find the newborn Messiah. The shepherds quickly left birth-of-jesus-1150128__340their flocks and ran to see if this was true or a dream. They found the baby Jesus in a very humble place just as the angels had said and they worshiped him.  These humble men were filled with awe and wonder and joy. The long awaited Messiah had come and they shared with everyone what was told to them. They went back to tending their sheep but their lives would never be the same!

There are dozens (maybe thousands) of books, songs and quotes about joy. I found, The Gospel of Joy, Christmas Joy, Quest for Joy, The Chemistry of Joy and the rock group Three Dog Night’s, “Joy to the World”.  What is true joy?  Russell M. Nelson stated it best, “The joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives”.

My husband and I chose Psalm 119:24 for our wedding day. During my last year of college I had become very ill requiring surgery and a postponement of our wedding day. This was a very difficult time as you can imagine! We trusted in God for my healing and celebrated April 2nd all the more.

“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Ps.119:24

“for the joy of the Lord is your strength”      Neh 8:10 (ESV)

“ Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice “        Phil 4:4 (ESV)

My father passed away on December 15th but this Christmas I chose joy. He loved God and believed that Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty of his sin so he could enter heaven for eternity. Not a perfect man by any means but Dad tried to live a life pleasing to God.

I explained to friends that if I say I believe that Jesus died so we can have eternal life with Him, I need to act in faith.  I am grieving but my Dad has gone to celebrate Christmas with Jesus.  Imagine what an awesome birthday party that must be!  We don’t really know what heaven will look like but we are told,

1  “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s oldwomanheavenhouse are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also       John 14:1-3 (ESV)

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.   Psalms 116:15 (ESV)

OR       When they arrive at the gates of death, God welcomes those who love him. (MSG)

My focus this year will be on JOY. I will try to find joy in good times or bad. I will search for God’s promises instead of focusing on my problems.  We do not have a choice in many of the circumstances that come our way but we always have a choice in the way we respond. Joy comes from an inward peace and contentment.

What is your word for the New Year?  How will you respond to events in 2019? Will you choose JOY?
