Encouragement

Glimmers or Love Notes From God?

Sometimes we can get so overwhelmed with our “to do list” and the very real problems we are facing. We might start feeling  like Eyeore, Winnie the Pooh’s friend.  It just seems impossible to follow Paul’s admonition!

Philippians 4:4      Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!

I recently learned that Psychologists are using the word “glimmer” to encourage people to look for the good each day.  The definition of a glimmer is “a weak light or “to shine faintly or unsteadily”.   We all have used the term “a glimmer of hope” or “the light at the end of the tunnel” to signify that things are looking a little better after a difficult situation.

Love Notes in God’s Word

My husband sometimes leaves me a little note to say thanks or to encourage me.  I would like to challenge you to look for glimmers in your everyday as love notes from God.   This is not a new concept at all! There are many scriptures that point us to God’s love, protection and provision.

Lamentations 3:22–23    The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Psalm 23:1    The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

John 14:27    Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

Love Notes in Nature

I love my backyard birds. Somehow they know when we have just filled the feeders and they swarm in.  Big and small, bright colors and dull, I am amazed at God’s creative design.  There is a pecking order but the birds just happily take their turns.  Have you ever gone apple picking? The orchards seem to go on forever and the tree are so full.  When surveying the abundance ( in a grocery store) remember that it is God who makes all things grow.

Watching the wind and waves while walking along the seashore reminds me how powerful He is.

Genesis 2:9    And out of the ground the LORD God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food.

Isaiah 51:15    I am the LORD your God, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar— the LORD of hosts is his name.

Matthew 6:25–26     Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?  Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

Love Notes of Hope

Other signs of God’s goodness happen in little ways that we take for granted.  Do not look at these as happy coincidences. Instead, be grateful for signs of God’s love.

  • Through the kindness of a stranger.
  • The very song you needed to hear comes on the radio.
  • Getting a phone call from a long distance friend.
  • Finding a five dollar bill in your car for coffee.
  • Sunshine coming through the window
  • Seeing a flower in the sidewalk.

Psalm 43:5    Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.

Glimmers aren’t just tiny moments that bring joy or happiness, they can also spark ease, relaxation, safety, connection or a feeling that the world is OK even for a fleeting moment.  Having a heart of gratitude connects us to the Source of all good things.  Thank God for the glimmers you find each day and think of them as tiny love notes.

ALL GOOD GIFTS

We plow the fields and scatter the good seed on the land..
But it is fed and watered by God’s almighty hand..
He sends the snow in winter, the warmth to swell the grain…
The breezes and the sunshine, and soft refreshing rain…

All good gifts around us
Are sent from Heaven above
So thank the Lord, oh thank the Lord for all his love…

Glimmer is just the word I was looking for to describe this feeling I have occassionally. A feeling of contentment and pure peace. Many days I would have that feeling as a small child living a simple life of playing and enjoying the moment.

    Thank you for this.
